Ōrotokare: Art, Story, Motion is a charitable trust dedicated to indigenous theatre and performing arts. Of particular interest is the establishment of the modern 'whare tapere' - pā based houses of storytelling, dance, music, games and much more. On this website is posted a large amount of material about our work - newsletters, images, video, audio and more. You can also find information here about two music groups - Reo and Tohu - who conduct their activities under our umbrella.
The arts of the whare tapere can be grouped in the following way:
-
Ngā Waiata (songs)
-
Ngā Haka (dance)
-
Ngā Kōrero (stories)
-
Ngā Taonga Pūoro (musical instruments)
-
Ngā Taonga-o-Wharawhara (body adornments)
-
Ngā Tākaro (games and amusements)
Ōrotokare researches, explores and performs each of these forms individually. We also bring these forms together into a coherent whole leading to the emergence of an experimental 'indigenous' theatre. You can read more about the work of Ōrotokare on our Activities and Philosophy pages. The genesis for Ōrotokare: Art, Story, Motion is found in a doctoral project entitled 'Te Whare Tapere: Towards a Model for Māori Performance Art' which was completed at Victoria University of Wellington in 1998 by Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal. Ōrotokare: Art, Story, Motion is a charitable trust.
